Origin
The Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki' is an evergreen shrub that originates from Japan. The plant has a rich history and is sometimes known as the Goshiki False Holly. It forms part of the Oleaceae family, which also includes the olive tree and jasmine. With its elegant presence and distinctive leaves, this plant has long been a favourite in Japanese gardens.
Characteristics
The Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki' is most famous for its variegated leaves, which mix green, yellow, white and occasionally light pink shades. This plant has sharp, serrated leaves that resemble those of holly, which makes a striking contrast with the delicate, sweet-smelling flowers it produces in the autumn. The shrub can reach a height of about three meters. The plant is hardy and remains green throughout the year.
Care
The Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki' has relatively low care requirements. The plant tolerates both full sun and partial shade, and prefers well-draining soil. Although the plant can withstand some drought, regular watering and an annual addition of organic fertiliser will promote growth and flowering. Pruning is not necessary, although it can help control the shape and size of the shrub.
