DescriptionSpecifications

Origin
The Veitchia (Adonidia) merrillii, also known as the Christmas Palm, has its origin in the Philippines. It is a type of palm that is also referred to as the 'Manila Palm', after the capital of the Philippines. This palm is native to forests, growing on both limestone and volcanic soils. Its distribution ranges from sea level to elevations of 400 metres.

Characteristics
The Veitchia merrillii is characterized by its slender, grey trunk that can grow up to 9 metres high. The trunk is crowned with a cluster of feathery leaves that can grow up to 2 metres long. This palm is dioecious, meaning there are male and female trees. It produces bright red fruits, which contrast against the green foliage, especially around Christmastime, hence its nickname 'Christmas Palm'.

Care
The Veitchia merrillii prefers full sun, but can also grow in partially shady conditions. It thrives best in well-draining soil and requires moderate watering. This type of palm is drought-tolerant, but grows best when the soil is kept moist. Although it is a tropical species, it can withstand some cold, but not below 0 degrees Celsius. When caring for it, it is important to regularly fertilise the tree for optimised growth.
