Origin
The Prunus cerasifera 'Nigra', also known as Black Cherry Plum, has its origin in Western Asia and Southeastern Europe. It is a deciduous tree that over the years has spread widely in different parks and gardens all over the world. This plant is a member of the rose family and the subfamily of plums.
Characteristics
The Prunus cerasifera 'Nigra' is characterized by its dark purple, almost black leaves and its beautiful pink to white blossoms that appear in early spring. This tree produces small, edible plums with a dark purple colour. The plant can reach a height of six to eight metres and is fast-growing.
Care
For optimal growth, the Prunus cerasifera 'Nigra' needs well-draining soil and a sunny to partially shaded location. The tree requires little care, but can be pruned in late spring after flowering to maintain its shape. During prolonged periods of drought, it might be necessary to provide additional watering.
