Origin
Fockea edulis, also known as Hottentot bread, is a perennial plant species that originally hails from South Africa and Namibia. This plant grows in the wild in dry and rocky areas and is mostly spotted in the northern hemisphere. The Fockea edulis has been used for centuries by indigenous peoples for its edible roots, hence the name.
Characteristics
Fockea edulis has a distinctive outward appearance with its tuberous underground trunk and juicy shallow roots. Above the ground, it produces slim, vine-like stems with heart-shaped leaves that are scattered. The plant produces small green-yellow flowers, followed by pods filled with multiple seeds for reproduction. It grows slowly and can eventually reach up to 1 metre in height.
Care
The Fockea edulis calls for some specific care. It requires strong exposure to full sunlight to light shade and needs to be watered when the top layer of soil begins to feel dry. While it's resistant to drought, the plant needs well-draining soil to prevent root rot. In winter, the plant must be brought indoors at temperatures below freezing, as it's not frost resistant.
