Origin
The Rhipsalis mauritiana, also known as the Mistletoe Cactus, originates from Mauritania. It is in the warm, humid jungles where the plant adapts to the conditions by developing epiphytic (growing on other plants) properties.
Characteristics
This unique plant is characterised by its hanging growth manner with numerous thin branches that end in small, spherical green leaves. Unlike most cacti, the Rhipsalis mauritiana does not have spines, but soft, hook-shaped hairs. During the flowering period, this plant produces small, white or light yellow flowers, followed by small, red fruits.
Care
The Rhipsalis mauritiana requires a light position, but does not like direct sunlight. Like other cacti, it is well resistant to drought, and requires only sparing amounts of water. Due to the plant's epiphytic attributes, it needs loose, airy soil that drains well - it will not thrive in compact, heavy soil. The plant can handle cooler temperatures down to 10 degrees Celsius, although it prefers warmer conditions.
