Origin
The Strelitzia nicolai, also known as the Giant White Bird of Paradise, finds its origin in South Africa. This plant grows wild along rivers and in places that regularly flood. It belongs to the Strelitziaceae family and is named after the nobility of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, from whence Queen Charlotte came.
Characteristics
The Strelitzia nicolai can grow to become a large plant, reaching upwards of six metres in height. It has long, evergreen leaves that resemble a feather thanks to their split shape. The plant produces beautiful, striking flowers throughout the year that resemble the head of an exotic bird. The flowers vary in colour from white to deep blue.
Care
The Strelitzia nicolai requires lots of sunlight, so should be positioned in a location with plenty of natural light, preferably by a window. Although the plant is drought-tolerant, it enjoys regular watering. However, too much water can cause root rot, so it's important to let the soil dry out between watering. The plant also benefits from high humidity and can occasionally be sprayed with lukewarm water. Care is completed with the monthly addition of a liquid fertiliser to the water during the growth period, from early spring to late autumn.
