Origin
The Opuntia erinacea 'Ursine', also known as the Grizzlybear Prickly Pear, is a plant from the cactaceae family. This shrub-like cactus originates from the desert regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The indigenous population has been using this cactus for thousands of years as a source of food and medicine.
Characteristics
Distinctive features of the Opuntia erinacea 'Ursine' are the dense clusters of grey or brown spines distributed throughout the entire plant. The plant produces small yellow flowers in late spring to early summer, followed by purple-red fruits. This species of cactus can grow up to 2 meters high and generally grows in bushels. It has a slow growth rate and forms an irregular but attractive silhouette when mature.
Care
The Opuntia erinacea 'Ursine' requires little maintenance and is extremely resistant to extreme weather conditions, making it a popular choice for landscapes in dry, warm climates. The cactus is hardy and drought-resistant. It does, however, require well-draining soil and direct sunlight. Care must be taken when watering, as the plant only requires occasional water and overwatering can cause root rot. This cactus has limited nutritional requirements and the use of light fertilisers during the growing season can help promote healthy growth.
