Origin
The Opuntia quitensis, also known as Red Buttons, is a specie of cactus that originates from South America. The plant owes its distribution to explorers and traders in the 16th century. It is especially found in wild regions of the Andes, such as Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia. The Opuntia quitensis also populates highlands up to 4000 metres above sea level.

Characteristics
This cactus belongs to the cactaceae family and stands out due to the absence of crown leaves. The plant grows in a bush-like manner and can reach a height of 1 metre under ideal conditions. The Opuntia quitensis is recognisable by its flat, oval and green appendages and the prominent red fruits that resemble buttons, hence the name Red Buttons. The flowers are bright yellow and bloom primarily in the summer months.

Care
A significant aspect of the care involves the water requirement. The Opuntia quitensis is a succulent, making it highly resistant to drought and requiring only sparing watering. A light position with full sun is recommended, although the plant also tolerates some shade. Because the Red Buttons naturally grow in rocky and gravelly soils, well-draining soil is suggested. This plant is also frost resistant and can withstand temperatures down to -7 °C. Regular fertilisation during the growing season will promote healthy growth.
