Origin
The Garden Orchid Bletilla, better known as the Hardy Orchid, is originally from East Asia. It primarily grows in the mountainous areas of China, Japan, and Korea. The plant is popular in both Asia and the West due to its exotic appearance and relative hardiness compared to other Orchids.

Characteristics
The Garden Orchid Bletilla is a perennial plant and is part of the Orchidaceae family. The plant is characterised by its bright purple flowers, with white varieties occasionally appearing, which grow on long, slender stems. The leaf is elongated and green in colour, turning orange-yellow in the autumn. It reaches a height of approximately 30 to 45 centimetres.

Care
For optimal growth, the Garden Orchid Bletilla needs a sunny to semi-shade position and well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Overwatering can lead to root rot, therefore it is important to irrigate moderately and ensure sufficient drainage. The plant is frost-hardy but extra protection is recommended during severe frosts. In the spring, light fertilisation can contribute to healthy growth and flowering.
