Alocasia cucullata
Bush
1ALCUBU09
Origin
The Alocasia macrorrhizos originates from Southeast Asia. The plant is also known as the 'Giant Taro', owing to the shape of its leaves. In the wild, this tropical plant is predominantly found in rainforests and moist areas. The plant was later introduced to America and Oceania, where it grows in temperate to warm climates.
Characteristics
The Alocasia macrorrhizos is a very impressive plant due to the size of its leaves, which can reach up to a meter in length. The leaves are a deep green colour and have a glossy finish. They are heart-shaped and positioned upwards. The plant can grow up to a height of 4 metres and does so particularly quickly, making it suitable as a visible element in the garden or indoors.
Care
When caring for the Alocasia macrorrhizos, it is important to consider its tropical origin. The plant likes a light location, but not direct sunlight and needs a constant temperature, preferably around 18-22°C. Furthermore, the Alocasia macrorrhizos requires a high humidity level and needs to be watered regularly. However, overwatering should be avoided; the soil needs to somewhat dry in between watering. Finally, it is important to fertilise the plant every two weeks during the growing season for optimal growth.
