Origin
The Caryota mitis, better known as the Fishtail Palm, originates from Southeast Asia. It can be found in a number of countries, including Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. This plant grows in varied environments, ranging from tropical marshes to mountain slopes and rain forests.

Characteristics
The Caryota mitis can be recognised by its unique leaf structure, which has a resemblance to a fish's tail. This palm can reach a height of 7 to 12 metres with leaves that can extend up to 3 metres, pending the growing conditions. It produces small, round, dark red to almost black fruits. This palm is monocarpic, meaning each individual stem dies after fruiting.

Care
For optimal growth, the Caryota mitis requires a location with bright, indirect light and high humidity. The soil needs to be well draining and the plant requires regular watering, but it does not tolerate waterlogging. Therefore, it is critical to prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged. During the winter months, water supply should be reduced. For healthy growth, this palm also requires regular nutrition in the form of slow-releasing fertilisers.
