Origin
The Dypsis lutescens, better known as the Areca Palm, is a popular houseplant that originates from Madagascar. It is also a variety known as the butterfly palm, which refers to the light yellow stems and leaves.
Characteristics
Key characteristics of the Dypsis lutescens are its graceful, feathered leaves and its air-purifying qualities. The plant can grow up to 10 metres tall in its natural habitat, but as a houseplant it often remains limited to a height of about 2 metres. It's a fast-growing plant, which usually has multiple trunks.
Care
The care of the Dypsis lutescens requires some dedication. The plant needs a light location, but not in direct sunlight. In addition, the plant requires high humidity and the soil needs to be kept minimally moist, without the plant standing in the water. During the growing season, from March to October, the plant needs a dose of indoor plant food every two weeks.
