Origin
Olea europaea is a plant species native to the Mediterranean region. The tree naturally grows in areas with a warm, dry climate and calcareous soils. For thousands of years, it has been cultivated for olive production. Its spread has occurred through trade and cultural exchange, and the species can now be found in various subtropical regions.

Characteristics
Olea europaea is an evergreen tree that can reach up to 10 metres in height. Its leaves are leathery, narrow, elongated and grey-green in colour. The trunk of mature specimens is often gnarled and knobbly. In spring, white to cream-coloured flowers appear in small clusters. The plant produces drupes, better known as olives, which turn black or dark green when ripe.

Care
Olea europaea grows best in a sunny, sheltered spot. The plant tolerates dry periods well, provided the roots can grow deep into the ground. Moderate watering is sufficient, especially outside the growing season. The tree prefers well-drained, calcareous soil. Regular pruning is recommended to maintain the shape and vitality of the plant.
