Origin
The Cordyline australis, also known as the New Zealand cabbage tree, originates from New Zealand. This plant was initially mainly found on the North Island, but is now present on all islands. The Maori, the indigenous population of New Zealand, used this plant for various applications including making ropes and baskets.
Characteristics
The Cordyline australis is an evergreen plant with long, sword-shaped leaves that can grow up to 1 meter in length. It exhibits palm-like growth with a single upright trunk and a crown of leaves at the top. The plant can reach a height of up to 20 meters. In the summer, the New Zealand cabbage tree produces small, fragrant flowers followed by berries.
Care
Despite its tropical appearance, the Cordyline australis has a surprisingly robust nature and can cope well with cooler temperatures. The ideal location for this plant is in a sunny to semi shady spot. It likes well-drained soil and prefers mildly acidic soil. In terms of watering, it is important to know that this plant is drought-tolerant and therefore it's better to water it a little too dry than too wet. For pot care, it is recommended to let the soil slightly dry out between waterings. The plant requires little pruning, only dead leaves can be removed.
