Origin
The Zamia furfuracea, also known as the Cardboard Palm, originally hails from Eastern Mexico. This area is known for its limestone soil and warm, tropical climate. The plant thrives best under these specific conditions.
Characteristics
The Zamia furfuracae is a striking plant with a trunk that can grow up to a metre in width. It has flat, oval leaves that have a glossy, leather-like appearance. These leaves can extend up to a length of 1.5 metres and are divided into 6 to 12 pairs of leaflets. The plant also produces cone-shaped seed cones that are red to yellow-brown in colour.
Care
A Zamia furfuracae requires well-draining soil and plenty of light, but not direct sunlight. The plant is drought-tolerant and thus needs less water than most tropical plants. When caring for a Zamia furfuracae, it's important to remember that an excess of water can lead to root rot. Finally, although the plant can withstand cold, it's best to avoid temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.
