Origin
The Vriesea El Dorado is a plant species within the Bromeliaceae family and originates from Central and South America. The plant was named after Willem Hendrik de Vriese, a Dutch botanist from the 19th century. Over the years, this tropical plant species has spread worldwide and can be found in various climates and environments.
Characteristics
The Vriesea El Dorado is known for its broad, green leaves with light, horizontal stripes that run along their length. However, the most striking feature is the long, bright yellow flower stem that grows from the heart of the plant, giving it its distinctive appearance. The flowers of the Vriesea El Dorado do not fully open but remain largely closed, with the colourful bracts being more visually striking than the actual flowers.
Care
Caring for the Vriesea El Dorado requires precise attention. The plant needs high humidity, which can often be achieved in a home by placing the plant in a location with indirect light and regularly misting it. The plant also requires a constant temperature between 15-25°C. When watering, you should not pour water into the pot, but instead into the heart of the plant where it can slowly be absorbed. As bromeliads only bloom once in their lifetime and then die off, it can be beneficial to watch for the growth of any pups or offshoots for future propagation.
