Origin
Juniperus sabina 'Rockery Gem', also known as the rock juniper, is a conifer that originates in Central and Southern Europe, including Great Britain. This species also grows in Western Asia and occupies various climate zones - from sea level to mountainous regions.
Characteristics
The Juniperus sabina 'Rockery Gem' is a ground-covering, broad-spreading conifer characterised by a densely interwoven branch structure. The leaves are scale-like and green with a bluish tinge. The plant grows relatively quickly and can reach a height of about 50 cm, while the maximum width can extend to 2 meters. It does not have conspicuous blossom or fruit, but small cone-shaped fruits may appear in older specimens.
Care
For optimal growth and health, the Juniperus sabina 'Rockery Gem' requires well-draining soil, preferably slightly acidic to neutral. It thrives in a fully sunny environment but can also tolerate partial shade. Despite being drought-tolerant and adapting to poor soils, regular watering during dry periods will be beneficial for the plant. It is also advisable to lightly prune the plant annually in the late winter or early spring to maintain a compact growth habit.
