Origin
The Thuja plicata, also known as the Western Red Cedar, originates from North America. More specifically, this tree is native to the coastal regions from Alaska to Northern California. From there, the Thuja plicata spread to other parts of the world, including Europe, where it is popular in gardens and parks.

Characteristics
The Thuja plicata is an evergreen, coniferous tree species that belongs to the cypress family. This tree can reach a height of 60 to 70 meters, although the average height in cultivation is often around 30 meters. It is recognisable by its richly branched, conical crown and the fragrant, scale-like leaves that can be both flat and upright. The bark of the Thuja plicata is thick and fibrous, and has a reddish-brown colour.

Care
The Thuja plicata requires little in terms of conditions, but grows best in moist, well-drained soil. It’s a rapid grower and can cope well with pruning, which is why it’s often used for hedges. The Thuja plicata prefers a sunny location, but can also thrive well in semi-shade. Moreover, the tree is highly resistant to frost and air pollution, making it a sustainable choice for urban or industrial areas.
