Origin
The Juniperus x pfitzeriana, also known as the Pfitzer juniper, is a cultivar of the Juniperus genus. This genus belongs to the Cypress family and has over 70 species worldwide. The Pfitzer juniper originated from crossbreeding the species Juniperus chinensis and Juniperus sabina, presumably in Europe in the 19th century.
Characteristics
The Juniperus x pfitzeriana is an evergreen shrub known for its wide, spreading growth habit. In adulthood, the plant can grow up to 3 metres tall and twice as wide. The needles are scale-like, dark green in colour and sometimes with a bluish tint. The plant bears berries that are initially green and turn blue-black upon ripening.
Care
The Pfitzer juniper requires minimal care. It thrives well under sunlight and partial shade. The soil has to be well-drained, but the plant will adapt to a variety of soil types. Infrequent irrigation is recommended during dry periods, but the plant is generally drought-tolerant. Pruning is recommended to maintain the shape, but it isn't strictly necessary and should be done sparingly for the sake of the plant's health. The Juniperus x pfitzeriana is hardy and can withstand low temperatures. However, the shrub can be vulnerable to specific pests like spider mites, scale insects and rust in case of diseases.
