Origin
The Picea pungens 'Fat Albert', also known as the Colorado blue spruce, is originally from the Rocky Mountains in the United States. The tree was discovered by botanists in the nineteenth century, where it adapted to a wide range of environments, from high-altitude mountain slopes to lower elevations.

Characteristics
The 'Fat Albert' is an evergreen tree with a striking blue-grey colour. It reaches a mature height of about 10 to 15 meters, with a conical shape that can be up to 6 meters wide. The tree is known for its thick, stacked branches and sharp, prickly needles, which are inedible and generally considered irritating. The cones are hanging and have a brown colour.

Care
The Picea pungens 'Fat Albert' is a low-maintenance tree that grows in a wide range of soil types, although it prefers well-drained soil. For optimal growth, the tree requires a sunny location, but it can also grow in semi-shade. The 'Fat Albert' is very tolerant of drought and cold, making it very suitable for colder climates. Despite its resistance to drought, regular watering will promote the growth and overall health of the tree. Pruning the tree is usually not necessary, unless for aesthetic reasons or to prevent the spread of diseases.
