Origin
The Alocasia sarawakensis 'Yucatan princess', also known as the Elephant Ear plant, is native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. This plant species is primarily found on Borneo, an island situated between Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei.
Characteristics
The 'Yucatan princess' is a striking plant due to its large, dark green leaves that often have a contrasting pink or burgundy underside. Under optimal growing conditions, the plant can grow to approximately 90 to 120 centimetres tall. This type of Alocasia is a fast-growing, rhizomatous plant, which means it grows from a rhizome, a type of underground stem.
Care
The Alocasia sarawakensis 'Yucatan princess' requires a warm, humid environment, similar to its tropical native habitat. The plant needs a spot with plenty of indirect light, but not in full sun. It prefers well-drained soil and requires regular, but moderate watering. It is advisable to let the water level drop between watering to prevent root rot.
