Origin
The Pilosocereus braunii is a cactus species that originally comes from Brazil. This member of the cactus family, also known as 'Blue Feather', is primarily found in the dry regions of the Brazilian landscape. The trend of keeping this plant indoors comes from South America, where it is valued for its unique appearance and easy maintenance.
Characteristics
The Pilosocereus braunii is instantly recognisable by its blue-green, column-shaped trunks. This plant can reach a height of 3 to 4 meters under optimal growing conditions. Rows of stiff, brown spikes can be seen on the trunks, forming a striking contrast with the soft blue-green surface. The plant blooms in the spring with striking night flowers, which are usually white in colour.
Care
The care of the Pilosocereus braunii is relatively simple. It prefers a sunny location and well-drained soil. The plant requires little water and it is important to prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged as this can lead to root rot. During the winter months the plant is better off not being watered, to prevent frost damage. Regular fertilisation during the growing season is recommended.
