Origin
The Astrophytum myriostigma, also known as the Bishop's Cap, is a cactus species that originates from the desert areas of Northeast Mexico. In particular, the species is indigenous to the Mexican states of Nuevo León, Coahuila, and Tamaulipas. The plant was already used by the indigenous population long before it was introduced in Europe as an ornamental plant for botanical gardens and greenhouses in the 19th century.
Characteristics
The Astrophytum myriostigma is a slow-growing cactus that does not have thorns, which is quite rare for cacti. It has a distinctive green colour and a striking, star-shaped structure. This cactus species has a cylindrical trunk that branches into five to seven ribs, hence the nickname Bishop's Cap. Its flowers are yellow, appear in the summer and last for several days before they decay into small red fruits.
Care
In terms of care, the Astrophytum myriostigma has a preference for full sun and well-draining soil, such as a standard cactus mix. Although this cactus is resistant to drought, it also needs regular, but moderate watering. In the winter months, the plant goes into a dormant period and requires virtually no water. This cactus is resistant to low temperatures but is not frost-hardy, and needs to be protected from frost.
