Origin
The Lophophora williamsii, also known as the peyote, is a type of cactus which originates from the southern parts of Texas and northern parts of Mexico. Peyote cacti are found in the southern region of the Chihuahuan desert and coastal areas. They have become acclimatised to dry, barren and lime-rich soils.

Characteristics
The Lophophora williamsii is a small, spherically shaped cactus that usually does not grow larger than 12 cm in diameter. The stem is green to bluish-green in colour and is covered in woolly areoles, which are points of growth from where flowers can appear. The flowers themselves are pink to white and have a 2-3 cm diameter. The fruit of the peyote is club-shaped, pink and can reach a length of 1.5 cm.

Care
Although the Lophophora williamsii is a desert plant, it requires some care to grow optimally. It needs to be planted in a dry, well-draining soil and requires full sunlight to grow. Watering should be done in moderation, allowing the soil to completely dry out between each watering. During lower temperatures, the amount of water should be reduced, as too much moisture can rot the roots. Peyote cacti are resistant to low temperatures, but not to frost. They can be grown indoors all year round at room conditions.
