Origin
The Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, also known commonly as the moon cactus, originates from the dry regions of South America. Its habitat stretches across Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. This succulent belongs to the cactus family and is named after the botanist Alberto Mihanovich from Buenos Aires.

Characteristics
The Gymnocalycium mihanovichii is particularly known for its strikingly coloured spherical trunks, which range from yellow, red, orange to deep pink. The plant has specific ribs that run in a circle pattern around the trunk. This cactus produces small white to pink flowers in late spring and early summer. The plant reaches an average height of 5 to 7 centimetres and has few or no spikes.

Care
For the care of the Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, it is important to use a well-draining type of soil to prevent root rot. It is a sun-loving plant, but cannot tolerate extreme heat. During the growing season, which typically runs from spring to autumn, the plant needs regular watering. In the winter period, the plant can go without water for a long time, due to its ability to store water in its trunk.
