Origin
The Rhododendron 'Eucharitis', also known as the Rhododendron williamsianum, originally comes from Southwest China. This plant is named after the British botanist J.G. Baker. This species belongs to the Ericaceae family, a large family of flowering plants which also includes the well-known heather and bilberry.
Characteristics
The Rhododendron 'Eucharitis' is an evergreen shrub known for its compact growth. The leaves are broadly oval, glossy dark green and covered with a fine, reddish hair. In the spring, the plant blooms with bell-shaped, pink-red flowers that cluster together. Interestingly, the flowers appear before the new leaves unfurl, making a pleasing sight.
Care
For looking after the Rhododendron 'Eucharitis', a spot in partial to full shade away from the direct afternoon sun is ideal. The plant likes a nutritious, acidic and well-drained soil. Ideally, sow in acidic, well-drained soil in the autumn. During the growing season, from spring to autumn, regularly fertilize with a fertilizer specially for Rhododendrons. Furthermore, it is important to give the plant extra water during long dry periods. Pruning is not necessary. However, if it does become necessary, this can be done after flowering to maintain the shape of the bush.
