Origin
The Trachycarpus fortunei, also known as the Chinese fan palm, finds its origin in China and Northern India. It is predominantly found in mountainous regions of these countries. The tree is named after Robert Fortune, a Scottish botanist who brought the plant to Europe in the 19th century.
Characteristics
The Trachycarpus fortunei is a robust, hardy palm tree. The plant can reach a height of twelve metres and has large, fan-shaped leaves that can achieve a span of two metres. The trunk of the tree is covered with fibrous layers, a natural adaptation to the cold mountain climates. The plant produces tiny yellow flowers followed by small blue-black, round fruits.
Care
The Trachycarpus fortunei thrives well in moderate to cold climates and is frost-resistant. The plant requires well-draining soil and sufficient space to grow. Although it withstands sunlight, some shade is recommended. In addition to regular watering, this palm demands regular feeding during the growing period. Pruning is usually not necessary, but old and brown leaves can be removed to encourage growth.
