Origin
The Veitchia (Adonidia) merrillii, also known as the Christmas Palm, is a tropical species of palm tree originally native to the Philippines and Malaysia. Various types are used as ornamental plants in landscape architecture in subtropical regions around the world. This palm got its common name because the fruits ripen during the Christmas season.
Characteristics
The Christmas Palm is a small to medium sized tree that typically grows between 6 and 8 metres in height and has a slender growth habit. The leaves are pinnate, bright green in colour and grow out in an elegant, upward arc. The plant bears clusters of flowers and fruits, which vary from bright orange to deep red upon ripening, adding a striking visual appeal to the landscape.
Care
When it comes to the care of the Veitchia merrillii, this palm requires exposure to full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil. Given its original tropical climate, the palm does not tolerate low temperatures and must be protected from frost. Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods, but overwatering must be avoided to prevent root rot. It is also advisable to use a slow-release fertiliser for healthy growth.
