Origin
The Pilea peperomioides, commonly known as the Chinese money plant, has its origin in southwestern China. This is why the plant is also referred to as the 'Chinese Money Plant'. It was first discovered by George Forrest, a British botanist and explorer, in the early 20th century. This type of plant belongs to the Urticaceae family, known for their diversity of more than 1200 species.

Characteristics
The Pilea peperomioides is easily recognisable by its round, bright green leaves that grow on long stems. The leaves actually have the shape and size of a coin, hence the common nickname 'coin plant'. The plant reaches about 1 meter in height under optimal growth conditions. It has an ability to grow quickly and systematically produces 'pups' or young plants from its base.

Care
For a healthy Pilea peperomioides, it is important to place it in a location with lots of indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn the delicate leaves. The plant has a moderate water requirement and it is advised to water it when the top layer of soil feels dry. Overwatering may result in root rot, which is one of the most common causes of premature plant death. A well-draining soil is also important for the growth and health of the plant.
