Origin
The Guzmania Patricia originates from Central and South America, mainly from the Andes mountains. Here the plant primarily grows in the rainforest, under the dense canopies of larger trees. The plant is named after the American botanist Lawrence Eugene Guzman.
Characteristics
They are rosette-forming plants with long, glossy green leaves. In the centre of the plant grows a fiery red flower that requires indirect light to grow. The flowers bloom from the heart of the plant and can remain for up to six months, after which the plant dies but produces new shoots. The Guzmania Patricia belongs to the family of Bromeliads.
Care
The Guzmania Patricia likes a bright location, but not in full sunlight. The plant requires a high level of humidity, as in its natural environment it grows in the rainforest. The plant needs moisture in the heart of the plant, not in the soil. By nature, the Guzmania Patricia is an epiphyte, which means that it grows on trees in the wild and not in the ground. Therefore, the soil should always be slightly moist but must not become saturated.
