Origin
The Alocasia Cuprea Red Variegated hails from Southeast Asia, more specifically from the humid, tropical rainforests of Borneo. It is part of the Araceae family. The unique species of the Alocasia genus contribute to the rich biodiversity of this ecoregion.
Characteristics
The distinguishing feature of the Alocasia Cuprea Red Variegated is its large, heart-shaped leaves that have a coppery sheen, hence the name 'Cuprea', meaning 'copper' in Latin. This variety sets itself apart with red stripes highlighting the veins on the leaves. Furthermore, the plant typically reaches a height of about a meter. The flowers of the plant are less prominent and are usually hidden beneath the large foliage.
Care
This species prefers a warm, humid environment mirroring its tropical habitat. Ideal temperatures range between 15-30°C and direct sunlight should be avoided. The soil needs to be well-draining to prevent root rot. The plant requires regular watering, however, it is important to let excess water drain away to reduce the risk of overwatering. Extra care is needed during the winter months, as the plant enters a period of rest and needs less water.
