Origin
The Opuntia basilaris caudata, also known as the Beavertail cactus, originates from the southwestern parts of the United States and northwestern parts of Mexico. The plant is found in the wild in desert areas, where it can withstand extreme temperatures and drought.
Characteristics
The Opuntia basilaris caudata is a low-growing, prickly cactus known for its flat, disk-shaped pads. These pads can have a somewhat bluish-green colour. In spring, the plant produces striking flowers that range from light pink to magenta. Another distinguishing characteristic of this cactus is its ability to propagate via seeds, but also via the detaches of its pads.
Care
For optimal growth, the Beavertail cactus requires full sun, well-drained soil, and minimal water needs. Although the plant is drought-resistant, it should be watered occasionally in the summer. In the winter, the plant should be kept virtually dry to prevent rot. The Beavertail cactus is hardy in USDA zones 8-11, which means it can withstand temperatures as low as -12.2°C.
