Origin
The Scabiosa columbaria 'Butterfly Blue', also known as the dove pincushion, originates from Europe and West Asia. In the wild, this perennial plant grows primarily on calcium-rich soil in dry grasslands and dunes.
Characteristics
The Scabiosa columbaria 'Butterfly Blue' is characterised by its long flowering period from June to September. The plant grows in a clump and the flowers are small, lilac-blue flower heads with a diameter of about three centimetres. The flowers attract bees and butterflies. The plant can reach a height of 30 to 40 centimetres.
Care
The Scabiosa columbaria 'Butterfly Blue' prefers a sunny to partially shaded location with well-draining soil. An annual pruning in the spring will ensure compact growth and richer flowering. The plant is hardy, but a sheltered position against harsh winter winds is recommended to prevent freezing. Furthermore, the plant has a moderate water requirement and is well tolerant of drought.
