Origin
The Prunus laurocerasus 'Herbergii' belongs to the Rosaceae family and originates from Southeast Europe and Asia Minor. It is a specific cultivar of the better-known Prunus laurocerasus, also known as the cherry laurel. This plant was introduced to Europe in larger numbers in the 16th century due to its decorative appearance and the fact that it is evergreen.
Characteristics
The Prunus laurocerasus 'Herbergii' is a compact shrub with a dense and upright growth habit. The leaves of this laurel are narrow and dark green in colour, and can reach a length of up to 15 cm. In the spring, the plant produces small, fragrant white flowers, followed by black berries in the autumn. The plant can reach a height of 3 to 4 meters, but it is very amenable to pruning and can therefore be used in various sizes.
Care
The Prunus laurocerasus 'Herbergii' prefers a spot in partial shade or sun and thrives in most soil types, provided they are well draining. For healthy growth, it is recommended to fertilise this plant annually in the spring. Pruning is best done after flowering, but the plant is very tolerant to pruning and can also be trimmed at other times. It is advisable to give the plant extra water during prolonged drought, especially in the first few years after planting.
