Origin
Paphiopedilum is a genus of orchids, commonly referred to as Lady's slipper. This plant predominantly occurs in the subtropical and tropical areas of Asia, such as South China, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The biodiversity of this genus is greatest in Borneo and Sumatra where they grow in a variety of habitats, ranging from primary and secondary forest to limestone and sometimes even in full sun.
Characteristics
The plant is characterised by a striking flower which, depending on the species, variety, and lithophytic or epiphytic growth form, can produce runners. There are about 80 recognised species with a vast range of flower shapes and colours. The perianth consists of two to three colourful leaves with a distinctive 'slipper' shape. Additionally, Paphiopedilums have long leaves with a leathery texture that remain green all year round.
Care
Although Paphiopedilum requires some care, it is quite easy to grow in an indoor environment. It prefers indirect, bright light, and doesn't need direct sunlight. The plant is ideally kept in an environment with high humidity and is not tolerant of dry conditions. Watering is common, but not excessive. Overwatering can lead to root rot and other issues. The use of a well-draining orchid mix is recommended. To promote healthy growth, it's advised to regularly add a balanced orchid fertilizer.
