Origin
The Echinopsis atacamensis 'Pasacana', also known as the Cardon, is indigenous to the Andes mountain range in South America. Particularly, the plant naturally occurs in the north of Argentina, Bolivia, and South Peru, targeting the semi-arid areas with altitudes of 1,000 to 3,500 meters above sea level.
Characteristics
The Echinopsis atacamensis 'Pasacana' is a member of the cactus family and is characterised by its significant height, often reaching heights of 10 to 12 meters. It has a tree-like growing habit, with a thick trunk topped by multiple branching or arms. Each of these arms displays a large number of ribs, which are covered with elongated spines approximately 1.5 to 3 centimeters long.
Care
Well-draining soil and full sun are essential for the health and growth of the Echinopsis atacamensis 'Pasacana'. Although the plant displays some tolerance for light shade, it will perform best in a bright environment. Watering should be sparing in the winter, with an increased frequency during the warmer months. Despite its origin from high mountain conditions, a certain degree of cold tolerance is to be expected, but harsh frost should be avoided.
