Origin
Melocactus bahiensis is a cactus species native to Brazil, where it grows in arid, rocky areas. The plant is mainly found in the northeastern region of Bahia. This cactus species is part of the Cactaceae family, which comprises countless cacti that thrive in various climates and environments around the world.

Characteristics
The most striking characteristic of the Melocactus bahiensis is its so-called 'cephalium', a bright red, spherical part on top of the plant from which flowers and fruits grow. This cactus has a green, spherical body with deep ribs and sharp spines. The flowers are small, pink in colour and blossom in late winter or early spring. The fruits are red and round, similar in shape and size to small berries.

Care
As a desert plant, the Melocactus bahiensis needs relatively simple care. It enjoys full sunlight and requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Although the plant is drought-resistant, it needs regular watering during the growth period. It is important to keep the plant dry in the winter, as it then goes into a rest period and needs much less water. The Melocactus bahiensis is not frost-hardy and therefore needs to be protected from low temperatures.
