Origin
The Ferocactus horridus, also known as the Biznaga de Limón, is a species of cactus originally from Mexico. This plant is primarily found in the dry and rocky regions of the central and southern parts of the Mexican plateau. Its natural habitat is mainly at altitudes ranging from 1500 to 2500 metres above sea level.
Characteristics
The Ferocactus horridus is a large and robust species of cactus characterised by its spherical to somewhat cylindrical structure, which can grow to a height of about 30-60 centimetres. This cactus distinguishes itself with its large, curved thorns that radiate outwards. The thorns can range in colour from yellow to red. It has a greyish-green to blue-green colour and a beautiful bright yellow flower emerges from it during the months of July to September.
Care
Caring for the Ferocactus horridus is relatively straightforward, making it a popular choice among cactus enthusiasts. This plant needs a strong need for sunlight and is best placed in a location where it can get at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. The Ferocactus horridus only requires a little water and overwatering must be avoided at all costs. The soil must dry out completely before watering again. During the colder months, it has a rest period in which no water should be given. It is advisable to protect the cactus as much as possible from frost and cold during the winter months.
