Origin
The Mammillaria formosa is a cactus species originally from Mexico. It grows in the wild in the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango and Zacatecas. The plant can primarily be found on rocky slopes and at high altitudes, often on the damp sides of mountains. The Mammillaria formosa is part of the large plant genus Mammillaria, which includes around 200 species.
Characteristics
The Mammillaria formosa is a spherical to cylindrical cactus, usually reaching a height of 10 to 20 cm. The plant has pointed, cone-shaped warts and is covered in white, firm spikes. The Mammillaria formosa produces small, edible fruits and small, carmine flowers, which appear in a wreath around the top of the cactus. The flowers typically bloom in the spring and early summer.
Care
The Mammillaria formosa needs little water and can survive long periods of drought without issue. Therefore, the plant should be watered sparingly, especially in the summer and almost not at all in the winter. Here, it is important to fully drain the water to prevent root rot. Furthermore, it is recommended to place the cactus in a sunny location, but with protection against the hottest sun rays. As the plant grows on rocky soil in its natural habitat, well-draining potting soil is essential for its healthy growth.
