Stem
4COBURS10
Origin
The Phyllostachys aurea, also known as the Golden bamboo, originates from China. This species is part of the grass family, Poaceae, and belongs to the subfamily of Bambusoideae. It is naturally found in the warm and temperate climate of northern China.
Characteristics
The Phyllostachys aurea is a bamboo species that grows to a height of 3 to 8 metres. It has a characteristic yellow-gold colour in the stems, hence the name Golden bamboo. This bamboo is one of the dense bamboo species and is characterized by its strong, upright growing habit. The leaves are typically 4-13 cm long and 1-2 cm wide and are a bright green colour.
Care
For optimal growth, the Phyllostachys aurea requires well-draining, fertile soil and a sunny spot, although it can also thrive in partial shade. Fertilising with a prescribed fertiliser during the growing season can promote growth. Despite the plant being resistant to cold, it may be useful to cover the roots with leaves or straw during the winter months as protection against frost. Pruning is generally not necessary, unless control of size and shape is desired.
