DescriptionSpecifications

Origin
The Pandanus utilis, also known as the Screw Pine, comes from the tropical part of the Indian Ocean, specifically the regions of Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles. It is one of many species within the Pandanus genus, which is primarily found in tropical and subtropical areas in nature. The Pandanus utilis has been introduced as an ornamental plant in many parts of the world since the 19th century.

Characteristics
The Pandanus utilis is characterised by its spirals of long, narrow leaves that bend slightly downwards at the end. The leaves are shiny green in colour and can grow up to two metres long. Young plants often develop a spiral growth pattern, with the trunk growing upward in a screw shape. The plant rarely produces flowers, but when it does, they are fragrant and yellow-green in colour. In mature specimens, aerial roots can grow from the trunk to the ground.

Care
Caring for the Pandanus utilis requires understanding of its natural environment. The plant appreciates high humidity and lots of light. Although the Screw Pine can handle drought, it prefers a well-drained, moist soil. Temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius are not recommended for this subtropical plant. Regular feeding with slow-release fertilisers during the growing season is advised to support the plant's health and growth. It's important to properly prune the plant, primarily by removing the bottom leaves when they begin to wither.
