Origin
Aloe ferox, also known as the Cape Aloe, originates from South Africa. The plant is primarily found in the Western Cape province and in certain parts of the Eastern Cape province. These environments generally consist of rocky hills and open plains where the climate is relatively warm and dry throughout the year.
Characteristics
Aloe ferox is a strong, perennial succulent that is relatively easy to identify. The 'Hybrid' variant can reach a height of up to 3 metres and develops a single, robust thickened stem with thorns. Rosettes of fleshy leaves, often with reddish-orange decorations and white thorns along the margins, form at the top of this stem. During the colder months, the plant typically produces a tall flower stem with numerous red or orange flowers.
Care
In principle, Aloe ferox 'Hybrid' requires little care as the plant naturally occurs in dry conditions. Watering should be moderate and only during the drier periods, and over-fertilisation should be avoided. The plant thrives best in well-draining soil and does well in both full sun and partial shade. It is important to note that the aloe is frost-sensitive and needs protection at temperatures below freezing point.
