Origin
The Euphorbia Echinus is a plant species native to the southern and western regions of the Sudan-Sahel in Africa. Its natural habitat includes dry, rocky areas and barren slopes. It is a member of the Euphorbiaceae family, better known as the spurge family. In extra-tropical climates, the Euphorbia echinus is often kept as an ornamental plant.
Characteristics
The Euphorbia echinus has several striking characteristics. It is a succulent shrub, which in its natural habitat can reach a height of up to one and a half meters. The branches of this plant are cylindrical and covered with angular thorn-like protrusions. The flowers of the Euphorbia echinus are small, inconspicuous and usually yellow, with male and female flowers growing separately on the same plant.
Care
To keep the Euphorbia echinus in health, there are a few care guidelines to follow. The plant prefers full sun and sandy, well-draining soil. Watering must always be done in moderation, especially in winter during the rest period, as excess water can be fatal to these plants. Its adaptability to dry conditions makes the Euphorbia echinus also ideal for xeriscaping, a type of landscaping aimed at gardens that require little maintenance. Fertilising can be done, but is rarely necessary. Preferably, this is done during the growing period.
