Origin
The Euphorbia stellata, also known as the Star-shaped euphorbia, is native to South Africa. It is specifically found in the Eastern Cape Province where it thrives in the dry, rocky soils of the Bushveld climate zone. Amazingly, this plant can survive in these extremely challenging conditions.
Characteristics
The Euphorbia stellata is a succulent that exhibits a cushion-like growth. It bears fleshy leaves of around 3-8 cm long, which fold together and hang in the sun. These distinctive leaves display a richly seasoned pattern, from grey-brown to deep green, depending on the season. Furthermore, small yellow flowers emerge during the flowering period, usually in late summer and early autumn.
Care
Proper care of the Euphorbia stellata requires a sunny location with well-drained soil. The plant cannot tolerate stagnant water, so overwatering needs to be avoided. In winter, this plant needs hardly any water and during the summer months it should be watered moderately. Despite its tolerance for extreme conditions, the Euphorbia stellata is not frost resistant and needs to be protected during cold periods.
