The Ferocactus townsendianus 'Variegata', also known as Townsend's Barrel Cactus, is a cactus species that has its origin in the desert areas of Mexico and the United States. This plant is part of the Cactaceae family and originally grows in dry, rocky habitats with minimal annual rainfall.
Characteristics
Characteristics of the Ferocactus townsendianus 'Variegata' are the strong ribs and barrel-shaped trunks, which vary in colour from green to yellow. The plant is covered with long, brightly coloured spikes that protect the cactus from herbivores. The 'Variegata' variety of this species has variegated, striped trunks and produces large, bright orange flowers in the summer.
Care
The Ferocactus townsendianus 'Variegata' requires little water and thrives well at high light intensity, but prefers not to be in direct sunlight. The ideal soil for this cactus is a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Overwatering must be absolutely avoided to prevent rot and the winter can be best spent dry at a temperature not lower than 10°C.
