Origin
The Mammillaria geminispina, also known as the Twin-spined cactus, is a native plant species from Central and Northern Mexico. This cactus predominantly grows in rocky and hilly areas, and is adapted to survive in extreme drought and direct sunlight.
Characteristics
The Mammillaria geminispina is a slow-growing cactus that is characteristic for its striking, pink-coloured flowers that bloom in the spring and summer. The plant has a cylindrical shape and is covered in spines that form groupings of two, hence the name 'Twin-spined'. The cactus reaches a mature height of about 10 to 20 centimetres, and is known for its ability to produce multiple side stems or 'pups', which contribute to a dense, bush-like growth.
Care
The care of the Mammillaria geminispina requires minimal effort, making it a popular choice for beginner gardeners or collectors of succulents and cacti. This cactus has a strong preference for well-draining soil and needs plenty of light, preferably direct sunlight. In the summer, the plant is most comfortable at temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius, while in winter it should be kept just above freezing point. Watering should be done sparingly, as overwatering can quickly lead to root rot.
