Characteristics
The Opuntia monacantha is known for its distinctive flat, oval leaves, which are actually transformed stems. Clustered thorns grow on their edges, which can vary in colour from white to brown. The plant is characterised by its bright, vibrant yellow or orange flowers that bloom in late spring and summer. Additionally, the Opuntia monacantha produces edible fruits which are red to purple in colour.
Care
The Opuntia monacantha prefers a sunny location and well-draining soil to thrive. The plant is drought-resistant and requires little water, especially in winter when it is dormant. To avoid overwatering and the associated root rot, it is essential to allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. Lastly, the plant requires a minimum winter temperature of 10 degrees Celsius.
