Origin
The Pachypodium mikea originates from Madagascar, an island to the east of the African continent. It grows there in both lowland and higher areas, in particularly dry and rocky environments. The name mikea refers to the Mikea people, an indigenous population group from Madagascar.
Characteristics
The Pachypodium mikea is a type of succulent plant, characterised by its thick, trunk-like appearance with thick, downwards bending branches. The plant has thick, fleshy leaves that are linear to oval, 12-18 centimetres long. The flowers are yellow and perfumed, typically 3-4.5 cm in diameter. The plant usually blooms in the late autumn to the early spring.
Care
The care of the Pachypodium mikea requires attention to its water needs, light needs and temperature. The plant needs moderate water and tolerates drought well. The Pachypodium mikea requires sufficient light, but tolerates direct sunlight less well. The plant grows best at a temperature between 15 and 28 degrees Celsius. It belongs to the hardiness zone 10-12 and therefore does not deal well with frost.
