Origin
The Pachycereus pringlei, also known as the Cardon cactus, finds its origin in Mexico, particularly on the Baja California peninsula. This cactus thrives in dry and rocky environments such as deserts and mountains, and is considered one of the species best adapted to drought.
Characteristics
The Pachycereus pringlei distinguishes itself by its imposing size, as this cactus holds the record for the tallest species in the cactus family with a maximum height of 19.2 meters. This cactus has massive trunks, the base of which divides into various branches that grow upwards and it has small, round, white flowers that only open at night. The fruits that this plant produces are edible and are the size of an apple.
Care
The Pachycereus pringlei is a reasonably low-maintenance plant. It needs full sunlight and thrives in warm climates, but can also survive in slightly cooler temperatures. The main requirement is well-drained soil to prevent root rot. Watering should be done sparingly, and only when the soil is completely dry, as the cactus can withstand prolonged drought. The best way to propagate this plant is by cuttings.
