Origin
The Rebutia krainziana is a rare succulent that originally comes from Bolivia. Here, the succulent mainly grows in the departments of Cochabamba and Santa Cruz at elevations of 1800 to 2500 metres. The species was first described in 1972 by the botanist Friedrich Ritter and is named after the Austrian cactus collector Hans Krainz.
Characteristics
The Rebutia krainziana is a small, globular cactus that rarely grows more than 6 cm in diameter. The plant has up to 32 radials, which are thin, brown to black and finely curved. The flowers of this species are strikingly orange-red in colour, with a diameter of about 3.5 cm and appear in late spring or early summer. The fruit is greenish, drying and becomes woody with time.
Care
The Rebutia krainziana does not make high demands on its care. The cactus needs a lot of light, but cannot tolerate direct sunlight. The plant requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Watering should be moderate, the plant is better too dry than too wet. It is important to hardly water at all in the winter months, to prevent the plant from freezing at low temperatures.
